How to Protect Your Personal Information from Identity Thieves When a wallets or a purse is lost, the wrong hands can find the belongings and use it to their advantage. We often store credit/debit cards, checks, policies, social security cards, and other important information in our purses or wallets. Thus, when we loses our wallets or purses there is no guarantee that someone will not take possession of the materials inside and use the information to open accounts, apply for credit, file bankruptcy, commit additional crimes, or cover a crime in our name.
It is advisable when such loss occurs to contact the police and following that by contacting the Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft Clearinghouse. It is important to contact your bank, credit card providers, policyholders and anyone extending you credit, reporting the loss. Even if you are not a victim of identity theft, your possessions are lost, thus you are at high-risk. Close any bank accounts, and apply for new credit cards and/or debit cards immediately.
Identity thief use addresses of individuals and use that information to get hold of other information. Identity thieves can learn your mother's maiden name and use it to gather additional information from companies. Any slice of information the thief gain puts him or her in control to a degree as the information can be used to get more information.
To illustrate, let says a company extending you services has your valuable information. The thief calls this provider and says, "Hi, my name is I've lost my wallet or purse and need my personal information to proceed in reporting the crime." Unwittingly this company may give out the information, believing it is you, since the thief was able to give out few pieces of your information. This is one example, however many types of statements or requests may be made to gain access to information.
Once your information is stolen and/or lost, you are at a high-risk of suffering. So when you fall into the hands of identity thieves the thief has motive and you are often accused of his crime. It can take weeks, months, or even years to resolve identity theft crimes.
As we are all imperfect human beings capable of making mistakes, we must go overboard in our habit. Hence protect your purse and wallet, by knowing where it is at all times. Only place the information in your wallet or purse that you frequently use and remember your social security number so that you can hide the card in a safe area.
Tips for remembering numbers Committing your personal information to memory is often better than carrying your information around holding the potential of loss. To remember numbers think of something that you can associate the number with and recite and repeat the number daily.
With your personal information stored in your head, you have less risks of losing your personal information. In other words, if you are carrying a purse or wallet with only unimportant valuables when you lose it what will it matter? Of course, we must carry out driver license with us at all times, and credit/debit cards, thus remembering the numbers could help, but it won't matter since we have to use them often.
I advise storing your information in your glove box instead of your purse or wallet and locking the compartment, only removing the information when you intend to go inside a building or stay at home. This is a recommendation if you have a habit of losing things. Thus, women should carry their purse with the straps around their neck and shoulders to prevent loss. Remember, identity thieves go out of the way in their job.
